A coastal city in southern China adjacent to Hong Kong. It is located in the south of the Tropic of Cancer with longitude 113 43 to 114 38 and latitude 22 24 to 22 52. Located in the south of Guangdong Province, the eastern coast of the Pearl River Estuary is bordered by Daya Bay and Dapeng Bay in the east, Pearl River Estuary and Lingding Ocean in the west, Shenzhen River in the south is connected with Hong Kong, and Dongguan and Huizhou in the north. The vast sea area connects the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean.

The city covers an area of 1997.47 square kilometers. There are 310 rivers with a basin area larger than 1 square kilometer, which belong to nine major basins. Shenzhen has a total area of 1145 square kilometers. Shenzhen's vast sea area connects the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean, with a total length of 261 km. It has well-known beaches such as Dameisha, Xiaomeisha, Xichong, Judiaosha, Dapeng Peninsula National Geological Park, Shenzhen Bay Mangrove, Wutongshan Country Park, Neilingding Island and other natural and ecological reserves.



Natural climate



Shenzhen is a subtropical monsoon climate, warm and pleasant, rich in precipitation. The average annual temperature is 22.4 C and the frost-free period lasts for 355 days. Rainfall is abundant, April-September is the rainy season every year, with an average annual rainfall of 1933.3 mm and sunshine duration of 2120.5 hours.

In 1986, Litchi and Rhododendron were selected as "City Tree" and "City Flower" by Shenzhen citizens. In 2007, mangrove was named the second "city tree" in Shenzhen.



A brief history of cities



The place name of Shenzhen was first recorded in 1410 (eight years of Yongle in Ming Dynasty) and built in the early Qing Dynasty. The local dialect is commonly called "Shenzhen" or "Gushing" in the field. Shenzhen is named for its dense water and a deep ditch beside the village. Although the history of Shenzhen's special economic zone is only 30 years, it has a history of more than 6700 years of human activities (in the middle of the Neolithic Age, there are aboriginal inhabitants living and multiplying in Shenzhen land), more than 1700 years of county and county history, more than 600 years of Nantou city history, Dapeng city history and more than 300 years of Hakka immigration history. In 1979, the Central Committee and Guangdong Province decided to establish Shenzhen. In August 1980, the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress approved the establishment of special economic zones in Shenzhen. Shenzhen is also known as Pengcheng. Since the establishment of the Special Zone, Shenzhen has been like a flying roc, fighting against the wind and clouds, traveling in the sky and advancing bravely.

Shenzhen is a municipality under the provincial jurisdiction of Guangdong Province in China. It is a separate municipality under the national sub-provincial plan. Shenzhen has nine administrative regions and one new district: Futian District, Luohu District, Yantian District, Nanshan District, Baoan District, Longgang District, Longhua District, Pingshan District, Guangming District and Dapeng New District. Since July 1, 2010, the scope of Shenzhen Special Economic Zone has extended to the whole city.



Population composition



The population of Shenzhen has grown rapidly since its founding. By the end of 2017, the permanent population of Shenzhen had reached 12.5283 million, an increase of 558,800 people, or 4.6 percent, over the end of last year. The registered population is 4.3472 million. The policy of reform and opening up, together with the special geographic environment, has created the openness, inclusiveness and innovation of Shenzhen culture, and has become a new immigrant city, forming a unique immigrant culture. In 2002, Shenzhen has 55 ethnic minorities. It is the second major city in China to gather 56 ethnic groups after Beijing. In recent years, Shenzhen has been selected as "the most economically dynamic city" and "the most popular city for migrant workers" in China, which is the most suitable dynamic capital for talents'entrepreneurship and development at home and abroad.



Languages



Putonghua is the mainstream language in Shenzhen. Many public service organizations, professionals and business people can provide services in English. Most teenagers can speak English and Cantonese. The whole city is carrying out various forms of foreign language learning activities such as "Shenzhen citizens speak foreign languages" to improve the foreign language popularization rate of public services and the ability of citizens to use foreign languages.
